Julie’s handcrafted vessels and sculptural works are characterised by her distinctive and innovative approach to the enduring technique of coil building. Julie works slowly and methodically to investigate the subtleties and complexities of pattern and texture. Line in its many forms plays an important role, in essence the approach is to build line by line, whereby the making process is very evident and integral to the work. The textured lines are not dissimilar to thread or yarn, giving a sense of softness to the otherwise hard clay surface. Much of the inspiration behind Julie’s work stems from her observation and reflection on the natural environment. Experiences in textiles and printmaking also underpins her work, and influences the way in which she interprets the world around her.
